Major Places of Interest in and around
Kathmandu Valley.
Kathmandu City: Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal,
also known as Kantipur, the name is derieved
from Kasthamandap which is translated wooden
house and many more pagoda style temples. The
main worth-seeing are like Kumari Temple, the
house of the Living Goddess, Shiv Parvati
Temple, Hippy Temple and Hanuman Dhoka Palace
enroute old Bazzar (Ason and Indrachowk) and
freak street.
1. Boudhanath Stupa: It
lies roughly 7 km. east of centre of
Kathamandu and it is supposed to be 2000
years old and also listed World Heritage
Site by UNESCO. It is centre of Tibetan
people and is surrounded by many Tibetan
Buddhist monasteries.
2. Bhudhanilkantha: This holy site is
a very famous forHindus, laying statue of
Lord Vishnu in water pond.it is so nice a
giants and attractive statue.There are
gathering and Pujas on the 11th day of lunar
calander.
3. Swayambhunath Stupa: It is
supposed to be one of the most ancient
Buddhist shrine of the Kathmandu valley and
roughly 2000 years old and also listed World
Heritage Site by UNESCO. According to the
legend thousand years ago Kathmandu valley
was submerged by water, a famous Buddhist
saint Manjushri cut off Choubhar gorge and
drained out water from the valley so later
it became a habitatual. This historical and
sacred site was an island of the lake. The
sankrit word Swoyambhunath means self
originated. Main attraction of the this
historical site is one can experience
religious harmony and this shrine is
worshiped by both Hindus and Buddhist.
4. Dakshinkali Temple: This a most
famous Kali Temple in the Kathmandu valley
which is situated 30 km. southwest from down
town. It supposed to be one of the famous
and sacred site to be animal sacrificed.
Only male animals are allowed to sacrifice
and Tuesday and Saturday are main attraction
of the site.
5. Kirtipur: This is one of the
historical and ancient city of Kathmandu
valley, lies about 8 km. southwest from
downtown. A few historical temples, Buddhist
monasteries and old typical houses can be
seen. It is famous for weaving and hand
knotted carpet.
6. Patan: This is one of the ancient
city of Kathmandu valley. It supposed to be
visited Indian famous Emperor Ashoka in 250
BC and four stupas were built which can be
seen till today. This historical city is
also called Lalitpur which means "City of
Fine Arts".
7. Bhaktapur: This is a third largest
historical city of Kathmandu valley and very
beautiful medieval city which lies about 15
km. east of downtown Kathmandu. Bhaktapur is
also called Bhadgaon which means "City of
Devotees" and very much popular for yogurt,
wood carving, Thanka painting and pottery.
8. Changunarayan Temple: This is one
of the ancient Vishnu shrine of Kathmandu
valley lies about 22 km. northeast of
Kathmandu which is supposed to be built in 5
th century. In the temple courtyard there
are few master piece of stone sculptures
which dates back 4 th century and they
represents different reincarnation of Lord
Vishnu.
9. Nagarkot: It is one of the famous
hilltop and view point to view Himalayan
ranges, sunset and sunrise and located about
30 km. east of Kathmandu at an altitude
2175m. Through the scenic drive one can see
beautiful landscape and rice terraces.
10. Dhulikhel: It lies about 32 km.
east of Kathmandu at an altitude 1700m. If
weather is fine one can see beautiful snow
capped mountains like Ganesh Himal, Langtang,
Gangchhepu, Dorjelakpa and many more.
Surrounding the Dhulikhel there are several
historical cities like Nala, Panauti,
Khopasi and Sanga.
11. Phulchowki: This is a highest
mountain in Kathmandu valley and located
about 18 km. southeast of Kathmandu at an
altitude 2800m. It is very famous place for
day hiking and bird watching. Lap of this
mountain, there is botanical garden and
water spout. Every twelve years there will
be held a very colorful festival in Godavari.
Out of Kathmandu Valley
Pokhara Valley: The Pokhara valley, gateway to
Annapurna region is one of the picturesque spot
of Nepal and also known as city of lakes.
Pokhara is the city of adventure. An enchanting
city nestled in a tranquil valley (900m.) it is
the starting point for many of Nepal's most
popular trekking and rafting destination. There
serenity of Phewa Lake and magnificient mount
Fishtail rising behind it create and ambience of
peace and magic. The best and closer views of
Annapurna Ranges and Mt. Fishtail can be seen
from here. Pokhara is well connected by air &
land with Kathmandu (200 km far & 30 minutes
flight) as well as by land with other major
destinations of Nepal. The major attractions of
Pokhara city are: Phewa Lake, Barahi Temple,
Devie's Fall, Bindabasini Temple and Seti Gorge
etc.
Lumbini: The birthplace
of Lord Buddha "The Light of Asia" is listed
World Heritage Site by UNESO. It lies 300
km. southwest of Kathmandu.The nativity side
is marked by a stone pillar erected by
Indian emperior Ashoka in 249 BC to
commemorate his pilgrimage to the sacred
spot. Here one can see the broken Ashok
Pillar remnants of an old monastery, image
of Buddha's mother Maya Devi etc are still
preserved in Lumbini.
The major attraction of this place are: Maya
Devi Temple, Sacred garden where Lord Buddha
was born, Puskarni Pond where Buddha's
mother had taken a bath before giving to
birth to Buddha, World Peace Flame, various
monasteries which represents different
countries like Myanmar Temple, China Temple,
Korean Temple, Japanese Temple and Nepal
Buddha Temple etc.
Chitwan: The main attraction of this
place being Royal Chitwan National Park
which is situated 120 km. southwest of
Kathmandu. This is one of the largest forest
regions with a wide range of wildlife – the
rare great one horned rhinoceros, deers,
sloth bear, leopard, wild boar, fresh water
dolphin, crocodile, the elusive Royal Bengal
Tiger and over 350 species of birds.
Tansen: This is a bright Himalayan
town situated on the slopes of a hill called
Shreenagar Danda with an altitude of approx.
1,500m. This is the most popular summer
resort of the western Nepal with the most
far stretching views of the country's main
attractions – the Himalayas.
Gorkha: Gorkha is situated 131 km.
west of Kathmandu at an altitude of 1,135 m
at the end of a mountain road that branches
north from the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway of
Anbu Khairani. Gorkha's center piece is the
magnificent Gorkha Durbar which is a fort, a
palace and a temple with excellent views of
the surrounding valleys and the Manaslu
Range.
